Tree removal rules in Manatee County

Updated 2026-10-27. Ranges on this site are not bids.

Tree removal in Manatee County, for this company, means Myakka City. It is the only Manatee town we serve, about an hour east of North Port. The county does not use one rule for every tree on a rural lot. Checked 2026-10-27 against the county's 14 February 2025 pages. Fees change. We do not decide which box your oak falls into from the truck.

A removal quote is still our labor: often a few hundred dollars for a small tree in the open, and several thousand if it has to come apart over a house or a barn. A county application fee, if one applies, is paid to Manatee County. It is not inside our number.

A private back or side yard is not a blank check

The county's residential tree page, published 14 February 2025, says you do not need authorization to remove or replace a tree in your private back or side yard. The same page says you cannot remove trees in an approved greenbelt buffer that is common area an HOA is responsible for, or trees in conservation areas. Street trees are a third category. The page defines them as required trees planted within 25 feet of the right-of-way along the frontage of single-family homes in residential developments approved after 15 October 1990.

The page says the county does not require a permit to replace required street trees, and then it lists replacement rules: size, species, timing, and distance from the right-of-way. It also explains Florida Statutes section 163.045. A dangerous-tree document from an ISA-certified arborist or a Florida-licensed landscape architect changes the replanting duty. The statute is not permission to clear a lot, and it does not apply to mangroves, which the state still regulates. An HOA may have its own landscape rule on top of the county. Myakka City acreage is often not a subdivision street-tree lot at all. A pasture oak, a tree in a conservation area, and a tree in a fenced side yard are three different phone calls. The county's number for field questions, printed on that page, is Environmental Field Inspections at (941) 748-4501, extension 6895. The page is Residential Tree Removal.

Common areas, commercial lots, and the $144 permit

Trees in a common area, on commercial property, or in a conservation area are a Tree Removal Permit, not the backyard sentence. The county's commercial and HOA page, also dated 14 February 2025, says the TRP application is submitted online and that the cost for a TRP is $144. The county's development review fee schedule, effective 8 September 2025, still lists a tree removal permit at $144. That is an application fee. It is not our removal price, and it is not a payment for the wood.

Replacement ratios and a payment in lieu of planting are on the county's permit instructions. They are easy to confuse with a contractor's bid. They are the county's, they change, and they are not repeated here as a Green Haven charge. If the tree is in an HOA buffer, a clubhouse lot, or a conservation easement, start at Commercial and HOA Tree Removal before you ask us to schedule.

Three different trees on the same Myakka road

A tree in a fenced side yard of a house, with no buffer and no conservation easement, is the county's February 14, 2025 backyard sentence: no authorization to remove or replace it. A tree in the greenbelt the HOA maintains, or in a marked conservation area, is the opposite. A required street tree within 25 feet of the right-of-way, in a subdivision approved after October 15, 1990, is the replacement-rule tree. Myakka City has all three possibilities and also has pasture that is none of them. A live oak in a field is not a street tree because it is near a fence, and it is not automatically a backyard tree because the house is on the same parcel. That is why the county's field desk exists. Call (941) 748-4501, extension 6895, before a rural clearing gets described as "just the side yard."

The $144 Tree Removal Permit is the common-area, commercial, and conservation application, on the county's page of the same date and on the fee schedule effective September 8, 2025. It is not a fee for a private backyard oak, and it is not the cost of our crew. Payment-in-lieu figures on the county's instructions are also theirs. Section 163.045 is a dangerous-tree path with a document from an ISA-certified arborist or a Florida-licensed landscape architect. It is not a letter from us, unless that document is actually in hand from someone with that credential, and it does not cover mangroves. We remove the tree after the category is clear. We grind the stump only if you add it. We do not re-label a buffer tree to fit the driveway schedule.

What to send with a Myakka City tree

Tell us if the tree is in a private side or back yard, near the road, in a buffer, or on acreage that is not a platted yard. Photos of the whole tree and of the access, including gates and dirt drives, matter as much as the species. We will not classify a conservation tree as a backyard tree to make the schedule work.

Stump grinding stays an add-on with no published price. The office that can answer the permit question is the county, at the number above. The office that can take the tree down, once that answer is clear, is tree removal.

Frequently asked

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in my Myakka City backyard?

The county's February 14, 2025 residential page says you do not need authorization to remove or replace a tree in a private back or side yard. Buffers, conservation areas, and street trees are excluded. Confirm your tree before you cut.

How much is the Manatee County tree permit?

The commercial and HOA page lists a Tree Removal Permit at $144 for common areas, commercial property, and conservation areas. The fee schedule effective September 8, 2025 still shows $144. That is the county's fee, checked 2026-10-27, and it changes.

Does the dangerous-tree law mean I can remove anything?

No. The county's page on section 163.045 requires documentation from an ISA-certified arborist or a Florida-licensed landscape architect for that path, and mangroves are still state-regulated.

Who do I call at the county?

The residential page lists Environmental Field Inspections at (941) 748-4501, extension 6895.

Is Myakka City the only Manatee area you serve?

Yes. The other towns on our list are Sarasota or Charlotte County, and they use those guides instead.
