Tree removal on our Sarasota County towns is not one permit. North Port, Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, and Laurel are the towns. The rule depends on the species, the size, the lot, and which government actually has the say. Checked 2026-10-27. Fees and forms change. This guide does not invent a county fee or a form number.
Green Haven is not the permitting authority. On the quote we look at the tree and tell you which jurisdiction the lot appears to sit in. You, or whoever pulls authorization, deal with that office before a protected tree comes down. We would rather delay a job than remove a tree the city or county still owns the decision on.
North Port is the city, not the county process
The City of North Port adopted a new Unified Land Development Code in October 2024. The city's tree page says a Tree Removal Authorization is required to remove, relocate, or irreparably injure a tree, unless an exception applies. The exceptions the page lists include prohibited and exotic invasive species, dead trees on vacant property when the city or an ISA-certified arborist verifies them, trees in imminent danger as the city determines, and nursery or tree-farm stock grown to be sold. Heritage trees are native species with a diameter at breast height of 24 inches or more. The page also says a tree location survey, with species, location, and diameter, is required with the application. Undeveloped lots that have trees eligible for conservation or mitigation need a mitigation form and a survey.
The city tells you to apply in Accela under a Certificate of Zoning Compliance, on the Planning tab, Minor Applications. The page says review is typically about 10 business days, and it says a fee is part of the application. It does not publish a dollar amount on that page. Older handouts with a permit price or a per-inch heritage figure are not quoted here, because they are not the current city page. A tree on a property line is shared, and the city says both owners should agree. Read it yourself: City of North Port tree removal and arborist services. County staff will send you back here if the lot is inside the city.
Venice and unincorporated Sarasota County
Sarasota County Environmental Permitting says it serves the unincorporated areas of Sarasota County and the City of Venice for tree permitting. The same page tells City of Sarasota, City of North Port, and Town of Longboat Key residents to use those jurisdictions instead. Nokomis, Osprey, and Laurel are on our list as Sarasota County towns outside North Port. Venice starts on that county page. If a Venice lot also needs the city planning department, the county page is still the first place it sends you, and you confirm before anyone cuts.
The county page says a tree permit is required for removal or relocation, and for pruning or irreparable injury in a Canopy Road Protection Zone or the right-of-way, and for planting in the right-of-way. It points exemptions, including exotic species, to the code, and it recommends calling a county environmental specialist before you remove native trees with a trunk diameter greater than four inches, or palms with a clear trunk greater than eight feet. The code chapter they cite is chapter 54, article XVIII. Their Accela guide says the application needs an environmental protection affidavit, a site plan, and a tree survey, and that fees are paid online when you apply. It does not give a single fee in the text we rely on, so this page will not make one up. Start at Sarasota County Environmental Permitting. County staff are reached at 311.
The order to follow before a saw is booked
Find the jurisdiction from the address, not from the mailing city. Inside the City of North Port, stop at the city tree page and the October 2024 code. Do not start an unincorporated-county application because the zip code says Sarasota. The city wants authorization to remove, relocate, or irreparably injure a tree, with the exceptions written on that page, a survey of species, location, and diameter, and a fee the page mentions and does not price. Their review note is about ten business days. A crew in the driveway tomorrow is the wrong plan if the tree is a healthy native and not an imminent danger they have agreed is imminent. Heritage size starts at 24 inches for a native. We still do not quote the mitigation dollars an old flyer used.
Outside the city, open the county environmental permitting page, confirm it still says unincorporated Sarasota County and the City of Venice, and call 311 if the lot might be either. Nokomis, Osprey, and Laurel get that check. Englewood gets both this guide and the Charlotte one until the parcel is clear. Ask about canopy roads and the right-of-way before you prune a tree that is not a simple yard oak. We will look at species and size during our quote and tell you if the job looks regulated. We will not file as the city, and we will not treat "the neighbor did it" as authorization. When the office says the tree can come down, the removal price is still the walk: a few hundred dollars in the open, several thousand in sections, stump extra. Their fee, whatever it is that month, is theirs.
The county line, and our role
Englewood sits on the Sarasota and Charlotte line. A lot there might be either county. Use this page and the Charlotte County rules, then match the address. We do not cover the City of Sarasota or Longboat Key as home base, and their rules are their own.
Species still matters after the paperwork. A hollow laurel oak and a healthy small ornamental are not the same conversation, and neither is a price. The removal quote is a few hundred dollars for a small open-yard tree up to several thousand for a sectional takedown near a house. Authorization, if you need it, is extra and it is paid to the government. To have us look at the tree, start with tree removal.
Frequently asked
Does Sarasota County permit a tree inside North Port?
No. The county page sends City of North Port residents to the city. North Port's own authorization has been under the October 2024 land code. Use the city page.
What is a North Port heritage tree?
On the city's page, a heritage tree is a native species with a trunk diameter of 24 inches or more, measured at breast height. It has extra protection. We do not quote a mitigation dollar amount.
Do I need a permit to trim a tree?
Ordinary pruning on your own lot is not the same as removal. The county page does say pruning that causes irreparable injury in a canopy-road zone or the right-of-way needs a permit. Ask the county before you cut one of those.
Will Green Haven pull the permit?
We identify which office appears to apply and we do not cut a regulated tree ahead of authorization. The application and any fee are between you and that office. We do not publish their fee.
Where do Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, and Laurel start?
At Sarasota County Environmental Permitting, which covers unincorporated Sarasota County and the City of Venice. Confirm the parcel before work is scheduled.
