Sod installation is quoted on the property. The list below is what makes that visit short and the number accurate. Sage measures and writes the quote on the spot. You do not need a survey, a pallet count, or a design board.
The price band you are aiming at is $0.85–$1.75 per square foot installed. Bahia is lower, Floratam and Zoysia higher, and haul-off or thin sand moves it again. Rock or mulch beds, if they are part of the same visit, are $3–$9 per square foot. None of that becomes a bid until the yard is seen. The sod cost guide is the longer version of the same ranges.
Photos and a rough area
Send photos of the whole area in daylight, plus a close shot of the worst spot and a shot that shows the house so the grade is visible. A midday photo matters if shade is part of the question. A rough area is enough to see scale: the front yard, the side, about so many paces wide. We measure for the quote. Your number is so we show up with the right expectation, not so you have to be a surveyor.
If only a section is dead, say which section. Replacing a sunbaked corner is a different job from tearing out an entire lot. If you already know you want Bahia because the area is large and open, or Floratam because it matches the rest of the street, say that too. If you do not know, the grass types guide is the comparison, and the walk can settle it.
The day of the walk
Have the gate open and the dogs up. If the neighborhood has a guard or a code, send it before we roll, not when the truck is at the wrong entrance. You do not have to be on site if someone can let us measure, but the quote is faster when you can point at the corner you care about and say whether that shrub stays. We measure the lawn area, look at the mat that has to leave, check the fall of the ground away from the house, and ask again about irrigation. Then the number is written. It covers the work on the paper: tear-out if that is included, grade, topsoil if the sand needs it, the grass variety, and beds if we added them. It does not cover a sprinkler repair you mention as we are leaving.
A useful photo set, if you send it ahead, is four shots. The whole area from a corner. The worst spot, close. The house wall so the grade shows. Noon shade, if shade is the argument. Add a sentence: irrigation yes or no, old sod has to leave or the ground is already bare, and which gate we use. A pallet count is not on the list. We do not price by the pallet, and a guess at pallets will not match the square foot we measure. If you are comparing us to a pallet price from a big-box yard, you are comparing material to an installed lawn. Bring that price if you want. We will still quote the job.
Two things blow up an otherwise simple quote. The first is discovering, on install morning, that the old sod was supposed to stay and we planned to haul it, or the reverse. The second is a locked gate or a car in the only access. Both are on this list because both change the crew and the truck, not because we like paperwork. Write them in the first message. If the area is only a side yard, say side yard, so we do not measure the front you meant to keep. If a bed is dying next to the lawn and you might want rock or mulch the same day, say that too. Adding it after the grass is on the ground means a second trip and a worse seam between the new lawn and the old bed.
Irrigation, haul-off, and the gate
Irrigation, yes or no. New sod needs water for two to three weeks, and we do not stay to run it. If the system works, we need to know the yard can be watered in the morning after we leave. If it does not work, or there is no system, the quote has to account for a hose on a small area or a delay until someone else fixes the zones. We do not re-plumb irrigation. A dry install with no water plan is the one we would rather not sell.
Does the old sod have to leave? Almost always, yes, if there is a dead mat or weeds. Say so, because haul-off is a real part of the price. If the ground is already bare, say that too. Gate access is the other practical item. A side gate that will not pass equipment, a locked community gate, or a car that has to move, changes the hour we arrive and sometimes the way material comes in. Dogs in the yard are the same kind of fact. Tell us.
While we are there we look at grade. Water should leave the house. If a corner holds water, point at it. We regrade for the sod. We do not install French drains. Beds that should switch from mulch to rock, or the other way, can be on the same ticket. When those answers are ready, book the walk through sod installation.
Frequently asked
Do I need an exact square footage before you come out?
No. A rough area and photos are enough to start. We measure on site and quote from that measurement.
What if I do not know which grass I want?
That is fine. Floratam, Bahia, and Zoysia fail in different conditions. The walk is where we match the grass to the light and the size of the area.
Why do you ask about irrigation?
New sod dies on this sand if it is not watered for two to three weeks. We need to know the water exists. We do not repair or re-plumb the system.
Is the quote free?
Yes. The on-site quote is free, and it is written before the job is scheduled.
