Tree removal does not automatically include the stump. Once the tree is down, you can leave the stump, cut it low, or grind it out. Grinding is an add-on because it is a separate machine and extra time on top of the felling and the haul-away. There is no stump price on this site. This page will not invent one.
The removal itself is priced from the tree: often a few hundred dollars when a small tree can come down in an open yard, and several thousand when a large tree has to come down in sections near a house, a fence, or a power line. After-hours storm calls cost more than a scheduled daytime job. The stump decision sits beside that number, not inside it.
What grinding is, and what it is not
A grinder chews the stump down into the soil and leaves chips. It does not excavate every root to the property line, and it does not guarantee that a sucker will never appear on a species that suckers. It does let you mow the spot, or plant something else, without a trunk in the way. Cutting the stump flush is the middle option: less equipment, and the wood is still in the ground. Leaving it is free of the add-on and wrong if the mower has to hit it every week.
Chips and rounds from the takedown are hauled off as part of doing the removal. If grinding is on the ticket, that debris is part of the add-on you approved, still without a published dollar figure. Access matters. A grinder has to reach the stump. A backyard behind a narrow gate, a stump in a bed against a wall, or a root flare full of rock can change whether grinding is practical. We look at that on the same walk as the removal. If we cannot get the machine in, we will say so and price the flush cut or the leave-it option instead of forcing it.
After the grinder leaves
The hole is chips and loosened soil, lower than the lawn around it. If you want grass there, it needs soil and time to settle before sod will root. Laying sod the same afternoon over fresh chips is how the spot sinks and dries out. We can sequence a sod visit later. We will not pretend the grinder finished the lawn. Suckers on some species can still appear from roots we did not excavate. Grinding is not a guarantee of a sterile circle. A flush cut avoids the machine and leaves a low trunk you can mow near but not over. Leaving the stump is coherent if the bed is going to cover it and incoherent if the mower hits it every week.
Access decides whether the add-on is real. Measure the gate before you assume the grinder follows the climber. A stump between a lanai and a wall may be a flush cut because the machine will not fit, and we would rather change the scope on the walk than gouge the cage. Emergency night work removes the hazard. The grind is a daylight return. There is still no price on this page. When you want one, it is a line on the removal quote, next to the felling price, not a number you multiply by the diameter from a chart we do not publish. Haul-off of the grindings is part of doing the add-on you approved. Leaving a chip mountain is not the default.
Decide before the tree comes down if the spot has a next life. Lawn means grind, then soil, then sod on a later day. Bed means the stump can sometimes stay under mulch if it is low enough and you accept the wood. A flush cut is the compromise when the grinder cannot fit and you still need the mower to pass. Tell us which future you mean so the add-on is either on the quote or clearly absent. Adding "oh, grind it" from the driveway as the truck leaves is a second mobilization, and there is still no menu price for that return trip. It gets written then, from the access and the stump, or it waits until we can see it. There is no diameter chart on this site to multiply while you wait.
Timing, permits, and the lawn afterward
On an emergency call, the priority is the tree that is on the house or split and standing. Grinding can wait until daylight and a normal schedule. On a planned removal, say at the quote whether you want the stump gone so it is on the paper before we start. Adding it after the crew has left is a second trip.
A permit, if the jurisdiction required one, was about the tree. Do not assume the stump is a loophole to remove a tree you were not allowed to cut. The county guides cover North Port and Sarasota, Charlotte, and Manatee. Grindings are not a signal that the paperwork was skipped.
If the spot is going back to lawn, the hole and the chips have to be settled and soiled before sod will root. That is a small piece of the sod job, not a reason to lay grass over a fresh pile of chips the same afternoon. Tell us if sod is the next step. The removal, with or without the grinder, starts at tree removal.
Frequently asked
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?
No. It is an add-on because it uses different equipment and extra time. You can leave the stump, cut it flush, or grind it.
How much does stump grinding cost?
There is no published price. The quote on site is the price. This page will not guess a number.
Do you remove all the roots?
Grinding takes the stump down so the spot can be mowed or replanted. It is not an excavation of every root across the yard.
Can you grind it during a storm emergency?
The emergency is the tree. Grinding can be scheduled after, in daylight, once the hazard is down.
