Bahia is the sod we use on large, open ground. The product page is Bahia sod. It costs less than Floratam or Zoysia, it handles drought better than Floratam once it is up, and it can take a slightly lower cut. It also seeds out fast. Leave the seed heads and the lawn looks ragged while the plants are still alive.
It is not a show lawn and it is not a barefoot surface next to a pool. People who want it to look like Floratam are using the wrong word for the yard they actually want. People who have a wide side yard, a new lot that is more field than courtyard, or acreage toward Myakka City are using the right one.
What it looks like here
Bahia in seed looks neglected even when it is healthy. That is the most common false alarm on this grass. A week of wet-season growth plus seed heads reads as a hay field. Mowing is the fix. A fertilizer calendar is not. Deep shade thins it the same way it thins the other two grasses. Open sun is the condition it was chosen for.
On a new install it is still new sod. Drought toughness comes after the roots are down, not on day one. Sand that drains in a day will kill a Bahia lawn that nobody waters during the first two to three weeks. We explain that window. We do not publish a minute chart, and we do not stay to run the irrigation.
What we do with it
The install is the same prep as the other sods: pull the old mat, grade water away from the house, amend only the sand that will not hold moisture, and lay the grass tight. The price sits at the low end of $0.85–$1.75 per square foot installed. Haul-off and a thin grade still move the number. That is a range, not a bid. A big open piece can be a lot of square feet at the low end and still be a real ticket.
Mowing a home lot afterward is the residential $35–$75 visit. Acreage, gates, and dirt drives are quoted from the property and are not inside that band. If the space is a normal yard that should look like St. Augustine, do not order Bahia to save the sod line. If it is open and the budget matters, start at Bahia sod.
