Bahia sod

Updated 2026-10-27. Ranges on this site are not bids.

Bahia is the sod we lay when the area is large and open, and the job that puts it down is sod installation. It costs less than Floratam or Zoysia, and it is the toughest of the three for drought once it is up. It can take a slightly lower cut than St. Augustine. It also seeds out fast. Leave those seed heads and the lawn looks ragged even when the plants are alive. Regular mowing is the maintenance. This is not a fertilizer program, and we do not sell spray.

The installed range for any of the three grasses is $0.85–$1.75 per square foot. Bahia is the low end. The price still moves when old material has to be hauled off and when the sand has to be graded or built up. That is a range, not a bid, and it is not a pallet price. A big open field can be a lot of square feet at the low end and still be a real ticket. The comparison with the other two grasses is the grass-type guide.

Where Bahia belongs

Bahia wants sun and room. Open ground, a wide side yard, a new lot that is more field than courtyard. It is the wrong grass if you want a dense barefoot surface next to a pool, and it is the wrong grass if you want the lawn to look like Floratam. Treating it like a show lawn is how people decide they hate it. Planted into deep shade, it thins and then gets blamed. Partial shade is a Floratam question. All-day shade should be a bed.

On a home lot in North Port the mowing that follows is the residential visit. Acreage is a different quote. The $35–$75 mowing band is for residential lots. A large Bahia field toward Myakka City, with a gate or a dirt drive, is priced from the visit. That distinction is the acreage mowing guide. Saying yes to Bahia does not put the mowing inside the small-lot band.

Water and the first weeks

Bahia is tougher in drought than Floratam after the roots are down. It is not tougher on day one. New sod on this sand can die in days if nobody waters it. We grade water away from the house, add topsoil only where the sand will not hold moisture, and walk you through the first two to three weeks. We do not publish a minute-by-minute schedule. Kids and pets stay off the first week. Regular foot traffic waits about two weeks. We do not stay to run the irrigation, and we do not re-plumb it. If the zones do not reach the back of a large piece, say so before the grass arrives.

Salt air does not turn Bahia into a coastal specialty grass. Englewood, Placida, and Gulf Cove change the rock and mulch more than they change this choice. The lawn still has to see sun. If the open area is inland and the ornamental beds are on the canal side, Bahia can be the lawn and a salt-tolerant bed can be the edge. We will say that on the walk instead of forcing one material across the whole lot.

What you are buying

You are buying the pull-out, the grade, the grass, and the instructions. Old sod, weeds, and root mat come out. Seams go down tight and staggered. A decent soil layer stays; sugar sand gets topsoil or amendment. Beds on the same visit are $3–$9 per square foot, separate from the sod band. Seed heads later are a mowing issue, not a sign the install failed. If the lawn was only ragged because it had not been cut, we would rather mow it than tear it out.

Bring a daylight photo of the whole area and a rough sense of how open it is. We measure for the quote. If the space is a normal yard that people want to look like St. Augustine, Bahia is probably the wrong product and Floratam is the one to price. If it is open and the budget matters, start the conversation at sod installation.
