Floratam St. Augustine sod

Updated 2026-10-27. Ranges on this site are not bids.

On most home lawns the grass we lay is Floratam St. Augustine, and the job that puts it down is sod installation. It is the St. Augustine named on that page because it handles partial shade and holds up in this humidity. Bahia costs less and belongs on large open ground. Zoysia is denser and slower once it is established. Floratam is the residential lawn between those two: sun part of the day, a yard people walk, and a cut that stays high. The full comparison is the grass-type guide. This page is the product.

Installed sod runs $0.85–$1.75 per square foot. Bahia sits at the low end of that band. Floratam sits higher, with Zoysia. The number moves again when old grass, weeds, and root mat have to leave the property, and when the sand is so thin it will not hold water. That is a range, not a bid. We do not price the job by the pallet. A pallet is a material count. The quote includes the haul-off, the grade, and the watering instructions.

Sun, water, and the cut

Floratam wants sun part of the day. A wall that gets morning light, or a lawn with trees at the edge and open sky in the middle, is partial shade, and this grass can hold there. Ground that stays dark under a mature oak at noon is not a Floratam lawn. New rolls will not change the light. If the space never sees sun, the honest material is a bed, not another piece of this sod. The St. Augustine mowing height is 3.5 to 4 inches once the lawn is ready to mow. Cut shorter and the canopy opens, weeds move into the sand, and the roots stress. That height matters more in partial shade than it does in full sun, because a scalped lawn has even less leaf when the light is already limited.

New Floratam on this sand dries out fast. Most lots around North Port, Port Charlotte, and Venice drain quickly, which means a missed stretch in the first weeks can kill the lawn in days. Before we leave we walk through how to water for the first two to three weeks so the roots take. We do not stay and run the clock, and the site does not publish a minute chart, because the sand, the shade, and the irrigation on one lot are not the next lot. Kids and pets stay off for the first week. Regular foot traffic waits about two weeks. A hose can carry a small yard. A large yard with no working water cannot.

Where Floratam fails

It fails in deep shade, and it fails when someone scalps it to make it look neat. It also fails when the first two or three weeks are treated as optional. An established lawn thins the same way in the dry months if the water never reaches it. The grass is doing what it does. The schedule is the variable. We do not sell a spray treatment. Thin, dry patches in full sun can be insects or a dry zone, and the work we do sell is a correct cut or a replacement of turf that is actually dead.

Salt spray is a bed problem before it is a reason to swap this grass. Englewood, Placida, and Gulf Cove lots push us toward salt-tolerant rock and mulch. The lawn choice is still sun, water, and the cut. We do not publish a salt rating for Floratam, and we will not promise it on a canal edge that bakes and blows. If the front is open and the side is dark, say so on the walk. We would rather leave the dark side as a bed than sell Floratam into a place it will not live.

What the install includes

We pull out dead grass, weeds, and the old root mat. We grade the sand so water runs away from the house instead of pooling on the slab. Where the sand is too thin to hold moisture we till in topsoil or amendment. That is a judgment on the lot. A yard that already has a decent layer does not get a truck of soil to look busy. Seams are staggered and pulled tight so the lawn is one surface. Rock or mulch beds can go in on the same visit, at $3–$9 per square foot for the bed, which is a different band from the sod.

Sage walks the yard, measures it, and prices it before the grass is ordered. Photos of the whole area in daylight help, including a shot that shows the house so the grade is visible. The written quote controls. The range on this page only tells you which conversation you are in. When the lawn is dirt and weeds rather than grass, start with sod installation.
