Soil compaction

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

Soil compaction is sand pressed until water and roots have a harder time moving through it. On our work the usual cause is a mower or a footpath on ground that is still soft. The page that pairs this with prep is soil prep before sod. We would rather skip a wet mowing day than compact the yard or tear the turf. That is already the rule on the lawn page.

Sand in North Port is loose when it is dry and treacherous when it is saturated. It is not clay. It still ruts. A rut is compaction you can see: a trench, a smear, and grass that does not stand back up. Repeating that path every week packs the line in. New sod on a rutted grade telegraphs the ruts through the seams.

What it looks like here

Look for mower tracks that stayed after the yard dried, for a gate path that is bare and hard, and for a low corner that both holds water and feels packed. Standing water and compaction travel together when someone tries to mow through the puddle. The fix for the puddle against the house is grade. The fix for the rut is to stop driving on it while it is wet, then let the surface be repaired when the sod or the soil is actually worked.

We do not sell an aeration program, and we do not quote a core-aeration price. Those words are not a service on this site. If the lawn is alive and only marked, the next dry visit is a mow at the right height. If the ruts are the lawn, the conversation is prep and new sod, not a machine that punches holes as a product.

What we do about it

We reschedule when the yard is standing in water or soft enough to rut. A residential mow is still $35–$75 when we do come, a range and not a bid. On a sod install we pull the failed mat, grade water away from the house, and loosen the idea that the old ruts are the finished shape. Topsoil goes in only where the sand will not hold water. Traffic stays off new sod for the first week, and regular foot traffic waits about two weeks, which is also how a fresh grade avoids a new packed path.

Tell us if the ruts are from our visit or from the week the yard was a pond. We will not match a bad track because the last cut went through it. The prep that replaces a compacted, failed lawn is soil prep before sod.
