Soil pH is the measure of how acidic or alkaline the ground is. People ask it when a lawn will not hold, and they want a number. We do not test pH, and we do not quote a lab figure we did not produce. The material page for what we actually add is topsoil and amendments under new sod. We till in topsoil or amendment where the sand is too thin to hold moisture. That is a feel and a look on the lot, not a meter.
A bag of something labeled for pH is not a Green Haven product. There is no brand on the topsoil page and no price per yard of soil. The material sits inside the sod range of $0.85–$1.75 per square foot installed, and only on the areas that need it. A yard that already has a decent layer does not get a truck of soil so the ticket looks scientific.
What we look at instead
We look at whether water leaves the house, whether the sand holds moisture long enough for roots, and whether the light can support the grass. Those three explain more dead North Port lawns than an unmeasured pH. Deep shade will not become a lawn because the soil was sweetened. A dry zone will not become a lawn because a number moved. Take-all and fungus are names other people use. We still do not treat them.
If you have a soil test from a lab, you may bring it. We will not pretend it changes the install into a chemistry service. We will still grade, still amend only the thin sand, and still tell you the first two to three weeks of water are yours to run. Coastal sand in Englewood, Placida, and Gulf Cove does not get a different pH product from us. Salt changes rock and mulch. It does not create a named amendment on this page.
What we do about it
On the walk we say yes or no to topsoil for the spots that are sugar sand. Photos of bare ground and of the house, so the grade shows, are enough to start. We do not sell lime, sulfur, or a spray that claims to set pH. If a garden center sold you one, that purchase is yours. Our work remains the sod job.
Ask us whether the ground will hold water. Do not ask us for a pH target. The judgment, and the reason there is no brand name, is on topsoil and amendments under new sod.
