Crown reduction

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

Crown reduction brings an overgrown canopy back to a smaller size without leaving stub cuts that rot. The service is tree trimming. We cut back to a lateral branch that can take over, not to a blunt stick. Topping is the blunt version. It makes the next storm worse. We do not sell topping, and the city's North Port guidance says the same thing about it.

Reduction is the cut when the crown has gotten too heavy for the structure, or too close to the house, and the tree is still worth keeping. If the trunk is hollow, reduction is the wrong comfort. Laurel oaks and water oaks here often rot inside and look fine until a storm opens them. A smaller crown on a hollow trunk is still a hollow trunk. That walk may end in removal.

What it looks like here

The tree is tall, wide, and over the roof or the neighbor's driveway. After a proper reduction it is shorter and still branched, with leaves along the limbs rather than only at the ends. Lion-tailing, stripping the inside so the weight sits at the tips, is the failure mode we will not perform while claiming we reduced the crown. The interior stays. The outline comes in.

On sand, roots stay shallow and a sail aloft is the risk. Reduction lowers that sail. It does not anchor the tree, and it does not replace a look at included bark and co-dominant stems. Those unions are part of the same visit when they are in the crown we are already in. A palm is not reduced this way. A palm is trimmed to the frond rule or it is removed. Ask for the clearance you need off the roof, in plain feet. Asking for the tree to be cut in half is how topping starts.

What we do

We say how far the crown can come in without topping it. If you want it at the gutter and the only way there is stubs, we decline that shape. The price follows the size, the roof, and the haul. Use $150–$400 and $500–$1,200 or more only as the bands already published. They are ranges, not bids, and not a per-tree coupon. Wood over a house gets lowered. It does not get dropped on the shingles.

Tell us the clearance you need and send the whole tree, not only the branch you dislike. The reduction visit is tree trimming.
