Deadwooding

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

Deadwooding is removing the dead and dying limbs before they drop on their own schedule, which is usually the worst possible time. The service is tree trimming. It is its own cut. A tree that only needs the dead wood pulled is a smaller job than a tree that also needs the crown thinned or reduced before storm season. We do not pad a deadwood visit into a full reduction to make the ticket larger, and we do not call a full reduction deadwooding to make it sound lighter.

Closer to the water, in places like Nokomis and the older oak canopy, dead limbs over a house or a drive are the first thing a summer storm takes. Deadwooding and a thin ahead of the season are why those yards call. The same word applies inland. The wind is just less constant. We are on call outside ordinary hours for storm damage. The trim itself is still booked when it is safe to climb.

What it looks like here

Dead wood is the bare gray limb in an otherwise green crown, often with the bark slipping. It may be small and over a walk, or a scaffold limb over the roof. Hanging broken wood after a storm is the same category once the weather lets us in. A hollow trunk is not deadwood. You can remove every dead limb on a laurel oak and still have a tree that should come down. We will say so.

Palms do not get deadwood in the oak sense. A dead palm frond is part of the palm specification: dead, yellow, or hanging, plus seed pods. Do not ask for an oak deadwood price on a queen. Do not ask us to strip the green head while we are there for the brown skirt.

What we do

We take the dead material, lower what has to be lowered, and haul it unless the quote says otherwise. A modest deadwood job on a small or mid-size tree with a clear drop is the sort of work that sits in the $150–$400 band. A large oak over a roof moves toward $500–$1,200 or more. Ranges, not bids. If collection is banned, we do not leave the pile illegal at the curb. We say where the wood is going.

Show us the gray limb in a daylight photo of the whole crown. We will tell you if the visit is only that limb. Book it as tree trimming.
