Sod establishment is the stretch after the rolls go down, while roots leave the sod and enter the grade. On our jobs that stretch is the first two to three weeks. The steps are watering new sod. We explain them before we leave. We do not stay and run the clock, and the site does not publish a minute-by-minute chart. The sand, the shade, and the irrigation on your lot are not the lot next door.
Establishment is not the month you picked and it is not a fertilizer program. Summer roots faster only when the water is actually on. A dry week with no irrigation is the install that fails, in any month. We install year-round. The calendar does not replace the hose or the zones.
What it looks like here
Seams that stay tight and a corner that does not lift are the good signs. A corner that lifts with dry soil under it needs water. Seams sitting in a puddle need less water, and the grade may be holding it. Kids and pets stay off for the first week. Regular foot traffic waits about two weeks. Mowing waits until the grass is holding and has grown enough to cut at the right height. A Floratam lawn scalped in week two is not established. It is damaged.
This sand drains fast. Most lots around North Port, Port Charlotte, and Venice will not store a watering for long. A small yard can be carried with a hose. A large yard in a dry week cannot be wished through. If you do not have working irrigation, say so before the grass arrives. We do not re-plumb systems or add zones.
What we do, and what you do
We pull the old mat, grade water away from the house, add topsoil where the sand will not hold moisture, and lay the sod tight. That prep is what the roots establish into. Topsoil is not on every square foot. A decent layer stays. Sugar sand gets help. The installed range is $0.85–$1.75 per square foot, variety and haul-off included in the spread. A range, not a bid.
You water in the morning, you stay off it, and you call if a corner is dry or soupy. We do not treat fungus or insects during this window. If the yard is dark all day, establishment will not turn Floratam into a shade grass. The steps for the weeks that decide the lawn are watering new sod.
