Gray leaf spot

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

Gray leaf spot is a fungus name people bring to a spotted St. Augustine lawn. The page that already covers the season and the watering habit is a year of lawn care in North Port. We do not treat fungus. We do not sell a fungicide. The sentence we will stand on is the one already on the mowing page: water in the morning, because a lawn that sits wet overnight invites fungus.

This glossary does not describe lesions, spores, or a spray calendar. Those details would turn a definition into a treatment menu. If a specialist names gray leaf spot, that finding is theirs. What we can see while we mow is a lawn that stays wet, a lawn cut too short, or a lawn that is thin enough to talk about replacement.

What it has to do with the season

From about May through September the wet season pushes growth and keeps humidity on the leaf. That is when a nightly irrigation cycle does the most harm. Sandy soil drains, which is good after a storm and useless if the sprinklers put the leaf to bed wet. Morning water gives the roots a drink and lets the surface dry. The same rule applies to new sod and to an established lawn.

Scalping makes a spotted lawn look worse because the canopy is already open. St. Augustine wants 3.5 to 4 inches. A short cut is not a cure for a leaf disease, and neither is skipping the mow until the grass is a mat. Weekly cuts in the wet season keep the clippings short enough to break down. We will tell you if we see the wet-night pattern. We will not spray it.

What we do about it

Change the clock to the morning if you control it. We cannot repair heads or re-plumb a system. If the grass is still a lawn, we keep mowing it at the right height. If the leaf spots have become bare sand, the conversation moves to sod for the dead piece, not to a chemical on the living piece. Shade, insects, and a dry zone remain on their own pages. We will not fold every brown leaf into this one name. We also will not name gray leaf spot from a spotted leaf in a text message.

The year, the wet-season week, and the reason evening water is a bad habit are on a year of lawn care in North Port.
