Scalping is cutting a lawn so short that the soil shows and the grass is shocked. On St. Augustine in North Port that line is below 3.5 inches. The page that sets the height is St. Augustine mowing height. The right band is 3.5 to 4 inches. Bahia can go slightly lower. Zoysia wants a shorter, tighter cut than St. Augustine, and scalping is still not the same thing as that tighter cut.
People scalp to make a shaggy yard look finished in one pass, or because a short lawn photographs as neat. On this sand the short cut opens the canopy. Weeds move in. The roots stress. A lawn that was only tall becomes a lawn that is thin, and then someone orders sod for a mowing mistake.
What it looks like here
The yard is pale, with soil between the plants, often a week after a cut that took off half the blade or more. In partial shade it is worse, because the leaf was already doing more work with less sun. In full sun the open soil bakes. Chinch-style dry patches and a scalp can sit in the same corner. We will not blame an insect for a deck that was on the ground.
A new Floratam lawn scalped in week two is the same error on grass that has not rooted. Foot traffic waits about two weeks. The first mow waits until the sod is holding and has grown enough to cut at the right height. Cutting it to look tidy before then pulls seams and sets the lawn back.
What we do about it
We put the deck back up and we keep the interval short enough that we never have to take a hay field in one pass. Weekly in the wet season is how St. Augustine avoids both the scalp and the thatch mat. If the grass is still there, it can thicken again at 3.5 to 4 inches, with water actually reaching it. If the stolons are gone, the height will not resurrect sand. That piece is sod.
We do not bill a residential mow by the hour, and we do not charge a special scalp fee. The visit is $35–$75 when it is a normal lot. Tell us if the last crew cut it to the dirt. We would rather raise the deck than match the mistake. The height is St. Augustine mowing height.
