Thatch

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

Thatch is the layer of clippings and stems that sits on the soil instead of breaking down into it. The page for the cut that prevents it is St. Augustine mowing height. On a North Port lawn it shows up when too much grass is removed in one pass. The pieces are long, they mat, and they smother the turf underneath. It is not a product we rake out as its own service.

Wet-season St. Augustine and Bahia can grow enough in five or six days that a two-week gap forces a huge cut. That huge cut is where thatch you can see comes from. A weekly visit takes about a third of the blade or less, and those short clippings can break down. The interval is the maintenance. A dethatching machine is not on our list.

What it looks like here

You see it as a brown mat under green tips, or as clumps the mower laid down because the grass was too tall to swallow. The lawn looks fuzzy and then thin. People call it disease. Often it is last month's clippings. Scalping to get under the mat makes the next problem, because St. Augustine cut below 3.5 inches opens the sand to weeds.

A lawn that is only long, with grass still across the ground, is a mowing recovery. A lawn that is dirt under the mat is a sod conversation. We will not power-rake a living lawn into the sand to honor the word thatch. We also will not mow a yard that is standing in water. Ruts compact the soil, and a wet mat tears.

What we do about it

We set the schedule to the season. Weekly in the wet months for St. Augustine and Bahia. Biweekly or slower when growth drops in the cool months. We cut at the height the grass wants, and we blow clippings off walks and drives. If a single recovery visit has to take a hay field down, we would rather do it in more than one pass than scalp to the soil. Residential visits are $35–$75. That is a range, not a bid.

If you already have a visible mat, send a photo that parts the grass to the soil. We will say whether the next visit is a mow or whether the lawn is gone. The height and the reason the interval matters are on St. Augustine mowing height.
