Podocarpus

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

Podocarpus is the denser, slower hedge we cut when someone wants a formal line that holds. The service is hedge trimming. It can sometimes stretch to every couple of months, where ligustrum and hibiscus often need a look every four to eight weeks in the warm stretch. That longer gap is the reason people choose it. It is not a permission slip to ignore it for a year.

It is a hedge plant on our list, not a tree we top and not a foundation filler under a window. A privacy row of podocarpus stays a privacy row if it is cut before it becomes a thicket. The visit price is still the hedge band, $75–$400 or more. Length and height move it. A range, not a bid.

What it looks like here

A maintained podocarpus face is flat and dark green, with the interior still alive because it was not sheared into a shell. A neglected one gets wide and woody. The same hollow-hedge warning applies: years of cutting only the outside leaves dead wood inside. Opening that up shows stems. Leaves return on a plant that still has green, on the plant's schedule, not overnight. If the row is mostly dead wood, we replant rather than carve a stump.

Heat still matters. A hard shear in peak heat stresses the plant when it is least able to recover. We will stage a reduction instead of hacking it to a fence line in August because a letter said immediately. Send the deadline. We will say whether the plant can meet it. If the row turns a corner, the street face and the side return are both lengths we measure. A formal line that has to match the next house is still this plant and still the same band. Send the height you want held.

What we do with it

We measure the row, cut to the height you want, and haul the debris. Both sides count when both sides grew. A corner lot with a street face and a side return is more length than one backyard line. Community matching is the same work: we cut to the neighbor's height if that is the line you give us. We do not keep the HOA packet.

If you are planting it new, say so. Spacing and a height you can live with after a summer are a landscape decision. If the row is already in the ground, the maintenance is hedge trimming.
