Salt spray is salt carried by wind off the Gulf, a bay, or a canal and deposited on leaves and beds. The page for yards that live in it is salt spray and coastal yards. It burns tender growth, and it breaks ordinary mulch down faster than the same product in central North Port. Englewood, Placida, and Gulf Cove are the towns where we plan for it. Placida is Charlotte County, on the sound. Englewood sits on the county line. Gulf Cove is canal and river frontage.
Inland North Port sand is a different problem. It drains fast, but it is not salted by the afternoon breeze. Do not use a coastal plant list on a dry lot five miles from the water, and do not use an inland shrub row on a seawall because the Latin name was familiar. The address picks the list.
What it looks like here
Leaf burn shows on the windward side. Mulch goes gray and flat and then disappears into the sand in a season that would have been fine inland. A lawn that holds in the front can burn along the canal edge where spray and reflected heat stack up. Floratam will not become a salt-marsh grass because it was laid carefully. Where that edge keeps dying, the bed moves in and the grass stops.
Volunteer growth comes off the water too: melaleuca, Brazilian pepper, and palms you did not plant. That is tree and debris work, quoted on its own. It is not solved by planting a new row in front of it. Australian pine and Brazilian pepper are removal conversations, not design features, especially on a lot that already takes wind.
What we do about it
We steer bed materials toward salt-tolerant rock and mulch. The species of mulch is still not named. Rock stays near the slab because it does not hold water on the wall. Mulch stays around the plants that need moisture. The bed range is still $3–$9 per square foot. A range, not a bid. Sabal palm, coontie, and, where the exposure allows, croton and viburnum are the plants already on our list. We do not hurricane-cut the sabal to help it with salt. Dead or hanging fronds only.
Bring the address. We will match the lot to the coast rule or the inland rule, and we will not sell you the wrong list with a zip code typed on it. The plant and bed filter is salt spray and coastal yards.
