Mulch volcano

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

A mulch volcano is a pile of mulch heaped against a trunk or a palm so the bark disappears. We do not build them. The material page for mulch used correctly is mulch for Florida planting beds. Mulch belongs on the soil around the root zone, in a flat layer, off the bark and off the siding. The point of the material is moisture at the roots. The point of a volcano is a mound that keeps the trunk wet.

You will see volcanoes in parking lots and on fresh builder yards. They photograph as tidy. In this humidity they hold water on the bark, invite rot, and give insects a damp collar. A sabal or a queen with its boots buried in mulch is the same mistake on a palm. Rock piled on the trunk is not an improvement. Rock belongs in the dry strip at the slab, not as a cone on the plant.

What it looks like here

The mound is higher than the bed, often a foot up the trunk, with the root flare hidden. After a wet summer the bark under the pile is soft or stained. The bed around it may be thin because all the material was used to make the cone. People ask us to refresh the volcano. We will refresh the bed and pull the pile off the trunk. We will not rebuild the cone and call it maintenance.

A normal mulch bed still needs a top-off once or twice a year because sun and rain spend it. That top-off stays flat. Salt spray spends it faster on coastal lots. None of that requires a taller pile. If the trunk already shows damage from an old volcano, say so. We are not a tree-care diagnosis from a mulch photo, but we will not bury the wound again.

What we do about it

On a bed visit we pull mulch off the flare, set a flat layer around the plants, and keep the wall in rock if the slab needs a dry edge. The bed is $3–$9 per square foot when it is a bed. A range, not a bid. Hauling a yard of old volcano mulch with no new bed is debris removal, $150–$600. We say which ticket you are on before we start.

If a previous crew left the cones, send one photo of the trunk and one of the bed. We will price the correction, not a matching mound. The way mulch is supposed to sit is mulch for Florida planting beds.
