Rock bed

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

A rock bed is stone installed as the cover of a bed, not as a single ribbon along a walk. The product we mean is river rock beds. It sits near the foundation and along hard edges. It needs almost no yearly refresh, it does not hold moisture against siding the way mulch does, and it does not rot after a few storms. White rock used only as a border is a different page and often a different price.

The bed range is $3–$9 per square foot. Depth, the stone, and the haul-off of the old material move the number inside the band. A range, not a bid. There is no bag price and no stone diameter on the site. If the photo is a wide bed, you are here. If it is one line of white rock, say so. That ribbon is quoted on site.

What it looks like here

A useful rock bed is a dry strip you do not mow, wide enough that the string trimmer is not eating the house. Grass in that strip fails. Mulch in that strip stays wet on the wall. Rock is the tool. It is a poor cover for a shrub that needs a cool root zone in August. Those plants get mulch beside the rock, not instead of the buffer.

The gallery shows rock as bed cover and as white borders. It does not label a frame as river rock, so we will not point at a picture and rename it. Leftover river rock from an old job is something we haul. A pile with no new bed is junk removal at $150–$600. A new bed is the square-foot range. Salt spray does not rot the rock. On coastal lots we still choose salt-tolerant material. We do not name a quarry.

What we do with it

Old material comes out. The grade falls away from the house. Edging keeps the stone out of the turf. Sod on the same day stays in the $0.85–$1.75 band. The bed stays in the $3–$9 band. They are not one number. Rock will not fix a yard that holds water because the slope points at the slab, and it is not a French drain. A photo with a shovel or a foot in the frame is enough to tell a bed from a ribbon.

Send a photo that shows the width against the house. That is enough to know if you are buying a bed. The install is river rock beds.
