Privacy hedge

Updated 2026-10-27. A definition from the crew, not a bid.

A privacy hedge is a row planted or kept so the yard is not open to the street or the neighbor. The guide is privacy hedges. The shrubs we already work are viburnum, podocarpus, ligustrum, hibiscus, and croton. In the warm months they can push several inches between visits. A northern hedge shaped twice a year is not the model. Hedge trimming runs $75–$400 or more, by length, height, and whether the visit is a recovery or a route. A range, not a bid.

HOA height is one section of that guide, not a second business. We cut to the line you give us. We do not know the bylaws, and we do not invent a community name. Send the notice if a height is written down.

What it looks like here

Viburnum is the common screen, dense and fast. Podocarpus holds a formal line longer and can sometimes go a couple of months between cuts. Ligustrum and hibiscus often need a look every four to eight weeks in the warm stretch. Croton is color, not a tall wall. Shearing it like a boxwood is how the color goes and the plant stresses in the heat.

A hedge fails when it is only ever sheared on the outside. Years of that, especially on ligustrum and viburnum, leave a twiggy shell with dead wood inside. Opening it shows wood. That wood is the history of the shear, not damage we invented. Cutting a living screen in half in August to get a view back can kill the privacy you planted it for. If you want it lower, we stage the reduction. If the wood is already dead, replacement is the honest quote.

What we do with it

We measure the rows on the property. Both sides count when both sides are grown out. A maintenance visit is a tidy pile. A recovery is a truck. We thin interior wood when the shell is hollow, and we avoid a hard shear in peak heat. Planting a new row is landscape work: species, spacing, and a height you can live with after a summer. Spacing that ignores mature width becomes a wall of stems against the fence. A street photo of the whole row is more useful than a close-up of one shrub.

Tell us if this visit is the cleanup or the start of a route. The answer changes the number more than the species name does. The rows and the intervals are privacy hedges.
